ELECTRODE MATERIAL SELECTION
There is a choice between two popular types of electrode materials - graphites and metallics. Each material has its own unique properties and will fit certain applications better than others.
The density and the grain size will be a key factor in its performance and cost. If your application does not require good finish or fine detail, then you can obtain satisfactory results with a less expensive graphite. If they are your primary considerations, then a material with small grain size and high density should be your choice.
- POCO GRAPHITE
The ultrafine grain structure of POCO's materials makes them the material of choice for close tolerance, intricate machined parts. These cannot be produced from conventional graphites which have lower strengths and inherent flaws.
- SUPERGRAPH GRAPHITE
An American made graphite for EDM Supplies, Inc. This graphite is good for use in forging and stamping dies, for roughing electrodes and finishing electrodes not requiring critical tolerance.
Both these graphites come in bulk plates, squares, rounds, blanks and custom electrodes.
When EDM first became a reality over fifty years ago, the primary choice for electrode material was copper. As improvements in equipment made EDM more feasible for "everyday" applications, the physical limitations of straight copper became evident. With EDM spark temperatures many times higher than copper's melting point, certain applications using copper electrodes were no longer cost effective due to unacceptable wear.
Each EDM machine needs additional chucks, fixtures and tooling. These are used to manufacture electrodes and hold them in the machine. These have been categorized as follows: chucks, grinding fixtures, drilling machines, System 3R Tooling, Rotobore Rotating Spindle System.
